Feeling a tiny glimmer of hope, being helped by strangers or family, stealing from the SS, doing what you can to make yourself useful to your tormentors are only some of the ways these individuals survived.

In his talk to the students, Vernon explained that as well as "hardening" himself to the horror around him, he played a kind of game with himself. Each day when he woke up, he would say to himself, "I'm still alive. OK, I know that role call is soon. If I can survive to then, I'll have made it through 1/8 of the day". All day long, every day, he would set little markers like this for himself, challenging himself to reach each one, each day.

When death is all around, perhaps others
in the camps did what Vernon did, steel themselves and try to make it hour by hour. For Vernon, it meant he would survive.
