Her
father had decided to help his children escape! It
was risky decision. Perhaps the rumur
was untrue. And crossing the Ghetto checkpoint without permission
meant immediate
death.
But he also made another choice, perhaps
even more difficult. He decided that the eldest of his two
daughters would escape first. Both of these decisions were
near
impossible to make, but one wonders how and why he decided
that his older daughter would be the first.
How difficult it must have been for him to make
such a decision.
Ironically, fate stepped in. Lillian
became sick. Her younger sister would be the first to
attempt escape. Lillian's mother led her younger sister
in to say good-bye, and Lillian too made a fateful
decision.
